Insights
There are 20 types of industries covered in the LinkedIn dataset for Sri Lanka. They have been divided into four groups for convenience of study. The groups are based on the average YoY hiring rate from 2017 to 2024.
Quartile #1: Leading industries (0.28–2.54% avg LHR)
Utilities leads by a wide margin with an average LHR of 2.54%, but this is highly volatile (7.2%), showing the highest volatility among all the industries, and shows the steepest negative growth trend for the category (-0.26%) and lowest LHR in 2024 (-0.62%) for this category, suggesting the spike may be anomalous or concentrated in short bursts, as suggested by the graph above.
Entertainment Providers and Retail also feature in this quartile with relatively high averages (~0.33–0.37%) and some volatility (>1.1%). However, both show negative growth trends.
Construction and Accommodation and Food Services round out this group, with Construction showing relatively high volatility (2.02%) and Accommodation the lowest in the group (0.93%).
Overall this whole group shows a negative growth trend.
Quartile #2: Growing Industries (0.23–0.28% avg LHR)
Hospitals and Health Care stands out with the highest average in this quartile (0.28%) and the lowest volatility (0.61%).
Consumer Services and Transportation both show strong positive growth trends (0.39% and 0.46% respectively), with Transportation also having one of the lowest volatility levels (0.65%) and highest LHR for 2024 (0.14%) across sectors in this category.
Education and Manufacturing, on the other hand, show strong negative growth trends (-0.51% and -0.44%) and negative LHR for 2024 (-0.062%,-0.019%) despite moderately high average LHRs.
Quartile #3: Transitioning Industries (0.19–0.22% avg LHR)
Real Estate shows high short-term recovery with a positive LHR in 2024 (0.06%), though the growth trend is highly negative (-0.65%), indicating previous surges are tapering off.
Government Administration has a mild average LHR (0.20%) but shows a positive growth trend (0.19%), potentially indicating renewed or sustained demand.
Farming and Administrative Support Services continue to decline with strong negative growth trends (-0.62% and -0.18% respectively) and negative LHR for 2024 (-0.76%, -0.021% respectively).
Quartile #4: Emerging Industries (0.09–0.19% avg LHR)
Holding Companies has the lowest average LHR (0.09%) but the highest 2024 LHR across all sectors (0.43%) and strongest positive growth trend (0.57%) also across all sectors, suggesting recent resurgence.
Oil, Gas, and Mining also shows positive growth (0.26%) and low volatility (0.44%).
In contrast, Financial Services, Professional Services, and Technology sectors all show negative 2024 LHRs, and the first two also show a negative growth trend.

Programming and web development skills like Java, JavaScript, HTML, and CSS are among the most transferable in Sri Lanka, appearing across Consumer Services, Education, Professional Services, and Technology sectors.
Backend and infrastructure tools such as MySQL and AWS also show cross-sector demand, especially in education and tech.
Business software like SAP ERP and Product Development skills are clustered around Manufacturing, Wholesale, and Holding Companies.
