Bangladesh and Regional Economic Monitoring for Understanding Poverty Trends#
Assignment#
The South Asia Poverty team have requested support for using alternative data to better understand economic trends in Bangaldesh and surrounding countires.
The assignment includes an analysis of small and medium-sized urban business activity trends, night time light analaytics, monitoring digitial connectivity, analyzing white collar labor market trends, and understanding changing commuting patterns.

Clone the repository:

Data#
The following datasets are used in this assignmet:
ACLED - Time-stamped, geolocated points where conflicts (protests, attacks, etc.) have occured, collected globally based on news and crowdsourced data. Data are accessible through a World Bank subscription.
BlackMarble - Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) Nighttime Lights from NASA.
Meta Business Activity Trends - Measurement of relative Facebook business page activity (posts, comments, etc.). Index values are compared to a rolling three month-prior baseline. The data is released daily and at a subnational level, aggregated by sector (e.g., retail, grocery). The data can be requested through the Development Data Partnership.
Facebook Network Coverage Maps - Maps that show where people using Facebook have cellular connectivity, including information about gaps in cellular network coverage after natural disasters. Development Data Partnership.
Ookla Speedtes Intelligence - Internet connectivity maps. Quarterly data at a subnational level is available publicly and more temporally and spatially granular datasets can be accessed through the Development Data Partnership.
GSMA Connectivity Index. Measurement of the performance of 173 countries – representing 99% of the global population – against key enablers of mobile internet adoption: infrastructure, affordability, consumer readiness, and content and service.
LinkedIn Economic Graph. Part of LinkedIn’s Data for Impact program, which aims to empower government and multilateral partners with labor market data. The data can be requested through the Development Data Partnership.
GitHub Innovation Graph. Aggregated developer activity on GitHub into eight core metrics. Metrics are aggregated by country (‘economy’). The data can be requested through the Development Data Partnership.
Google Search Trends. A private Google service for analyzing Google seach trends at a sub-national level. API access can be requested through the Development Data Partnership.
Meta Movement Distribution. Maps that show how many Facebook location history users moved from one area to another. The data can be requested through the Development Data Partnership.

Data Availability Statement#
Restrictions may apply to the data that support the findings of this study. Data received from the private sector through the Development Data Partnership are subject to the terms and conditions of the data license agreement and the “Official Use Only” data classification. These data are available upon request through the Development Data Partnership. Licensing and access information for all other datasets are included in the documentation.
