Insights
There are 20 types of industries covered in the LinkedIn dataset. They have been divided into four groups for convenience of study. The groups are based on the average YoY hiring rate from 2017 to 2024.
Quartile #1: Leading industries (0.19-0.24% avg LHR)
Top Performers:
Consumer Services leads with the highest average LHR (0.24%) and positive 2024 growth trend (0.046%). It is the only industry in this group showing a positive growth trend in 2024.
Farming, Ranching, Forestry also has a high average LHR (0.24%) but shows a strong negative trend (-0.39%), despite starting high.
Stability & Volatility:
Farming, Ranching, Forestry has the highest volatility (0.62%) among top performers.
Government Administration has the lowest volatility (0.35%) in this group and a relatively mild downward trend (-0.09%).
Overall, these industries may have benefitted early post-COVID but are now showing signs of saturation or correction. Despite being top quartile performers historically, only one shows continued growth.
Quartile #2: Growing Industries (0.15-0.19% avg LHR)
Hospitals and Health Care has the highest average LHR at 0.19%. The volatility of this industry is 0.45%, second lowest among this category, only highest than Utilities with a volatility of 0.38%. It shows a small but positive trend (0.0356%).
Utilities shows a strong positive trend (0.135%) and growth in 2024 (0.143%) — a sign of resurgence or sustained demand.
Construction is the only industry in this group showing negative growth trend (-0.047%) with mild negative LHR in 2024 (-0.077%).
This group shows signs of stabilization and consistent moderate growth.
Quartile #3: Transitioning Industries (0.11-0.15% avg LHR)
Oil, Gas, and Mining is declining sharply (growth trend: -0.54%, 2024 LHR: -0.35%). This category shows the lowest LHR in 2024 across the entire industries, possibly indicating structural or demand shifts.
Financial Services also shows a strong downward trend (-0.24).
Administrative and Support Services and Transportation & Logistics are negative, but close to flat growth trends (-0.094%, -0.0175% respectively), with mild negaitve LHR in 2024 (-0.052%, -0.056%).
Quartile #4: Emerging Industries (0.08-0.11% avg LHR)
Technology, Information and Media is the only industry in this group with positive trend (0.052%) and positive 2024 LHR (0.028%), despite low historical average.
Entertainment Providers also shows a small but positive trend (0.0245%).
Wholesale shows the steepest decline in this group (trend: -0.31) and the lowest LHR obversed in 2024 (-0.13%) in this category.

The most transferable skill across industries in India is Tally ERP, appearing in 11 out of 20 sectors, including government, finance, retail, logistics, and manufacturing—highlighting its importance for accounting and operations.
Programming and computer science skills like C, Java, and Data Structures are also widely applicable, particularly in education, tech, and professional services.
Business operations skills like GST and Vendor Management show strong relevance in consumer-facing and logistics sectors. While technical, Project Commissioning stands out as a niche but essential skill in infrastructure-heavy industries like utilities and mining.
