Geographer#

Andres joined the GOST team as a Geographer in 2021, after working as a geospatial consultant for WB projects related to poverty-environment links, and food insecurity forecasting.

He has a background in Geography, Geographic Information Systems, and Remote Sensing, and is interested in leveraging these tools to inform operations and support development that is inclusive and sustainable.

He specializes in Python, challenging data problems, and using open-source tools to implement replicable workflows. He developed GEE_Zonal to facilitate the extraction of time series statistics form Google Earth Engine, has contributed to analytical repositories from GOST, analyses of agricultural productivity and maritime traffic through the Data Lab, and maintains a sub-national food security dataset to inform crisis financing.

  1. Space2Stats - Global database and API to provide easier access to geographic statistics.

  2. Pacific Observatory - Using non-traditional data (nighttime lights, shipping vessels, aviation statistics, news) to mitigate the impact of data gaps for the Pacific Island Countries.

  3. AIS Analytics - Lead research on the use of AIS data at the World Bank.

  4. Niger Economic Monitoring - Using NASA remote sensing data to analyze productivity trends in cropland areas.

  5. Red Sea Crisis - Using AIS data to estimate changes in maritime traffic after the Red Sea attacks.

  6. Health Equity Diagnostics - Using geospatial data to analyze health equity in the Philippines.
